Today a 'topping-off' ceremony was held to celebrate the roof of our dedicated new state-of-the-art ophthalmic hospital being covered. The ceremony was attended by our staff, Takero Shimazaki and Tomoyo Arimoto from the award winning, London based architect firm, Toh Shimazaki, who are responsible for the design, David Hobson from the building contractors, J C Lilywhites, and many of those who have been working on the build to date.
Mr Hobson explained how the ceremony had evolved from one performed in Pagan times and was intended to help protect the building and its occupants from harm. He also took the opportunity to thank everyone who had been working so hard on the project.
Two young oak trees were presented to Sheraz Daya, Medical Director of Centre for Sight and the Corneoplastic Unit at the Queen Victoria Hospital, and his wife and fellow ophthalmic consultant, Marcela Espinosa-Lagana. Mr Daya promised to plant the trees within the extensive grounds of the hospital and looked forward to seeing them grow along with the facility !
