IntraLASIK v. LASIK eye surgery

what makes IntraLASIK so much better than LASIK eye surgery?

There are a number of valuable benefits that this form of surgery provides:

  1 • SAFETY
  2 • PRECISION & WIDER SUITABILITY
  3 • EXCELLENT VISUAL OUTCOMES
  4 • THIN FLAPS
  5 • LOWER RETREATMENT RATES
6 • DECREASED RISK OF DRY EYE
safety

the no.1 reason for not compromising

Centre for Sight, UK’s longest provider of IntraLASIK and one of Europe’s first 10 installations, invested in IntraLASIK technology principally to improve patient safety further. Safety is something we take extremely seriously. IntraLASIK is a much, safer and more accurate method than the traditional ‘blade’ procedure and has the ability to create thin flaps with an unprecedented level of accuracy. Centre for Sight always puts your peace of mind and safety above everything else by choosing equipment that is state of the art. We also use disposable instruments to lower the risk of infection.

Unlike most other laser centres, at Centre for Sight separate disposables are used for each eye - further reassurance to you about safety.

precision & wider suitability

over 100 times the accuracy of a microkeratome

The IntraLase creates flaps of equal thickness and perfect dimension. The measurements are so accurate that Centre for Sight surgeons can treat patients previously rejected for laser vision correction because of their corneas being too thin. This high degree of accuracy allows our surgeons to accurately and confidentally plan laser vision correction procedures.

excellent visual outcomes

precision means better than "perfect"

At Centre for Sight since we began in 1996, we have had consistently excellent outcomes. The introduction of IntraLASIK combined with new personalised treatment profiles have improved our outcomes further with more than 95% of our patients obtaining perfect vision. Our recorrection rate for shortsight has also halved to less than 1% for Shortsighted treatments!

thin flaps
mean among other things, recovery is even swifter

There are considerable advantages of performing "Thin flap LASIK" or Sub-Bowman's Keratomileusis. We at Centre for Sight have been aware of the advantages of thin flaps and have continued to perform thin flap IntraLASIK since acquisition of the Intralase. The advantages include rapid visual recovery, less induced aberrations, less dry eye (see above), less central tissue removal and increased residual cornea, higher levels of shortsighted and astigmatic treatments.

lower retreatment/enhancement rates
higher precision means far less need for retreatment

Sometimes enhancement or re-treatment is necessary. This happens when either over correction, under correction or regression occurs - where the eye slips back slightly. Enhancements are typically performed three months after initial surgery, when the eye has stabilised. Rates of re-treatment vary from centre to centre, ranging from 4% to 10%, Our rate is low for a variety of reasons, including close audit of our outcomes, nomogram adjustments as well the use of Intralase. Our re-treatment rate for short-sightedness is less than 1% (700 consecutive cases - August 2005).

decreased risk of dry eye
less risk and if this occurs lasts less time

The Intralase flap is PLANAR which means its thickness or thinness is the same throughout. Traditional flaps with a blade keratome are typically “LENTICULAR” being thicker on the sides and thinner at the centre. In cutting thicker on the sides, the lade flap can involve major nerve bundles entering the cornea. Nerve sensation is required for normal tear production and the involvement of major bundles results in dry eye of greater magnitude and longer duration. Thin Intralase flaps ONLY cut nerve endings which grow back quicker resulting in less dry eye and of shorter duration following IntraLASIK. Intralase flap
avoids deep nerve bundles
