Thalidomide poses new challenges
April 2009

People disabled by the morning-sickness drug, thalidomide, are now facing new health problems as they approach middle age.

A 46-year-old man from Brighton with absent external ears found it particularly difficult when he was told he needed reading glasses.

The consultant to whom he was referred, Sheraz Daya, spent more than a month testing the stability of his patient's vision before using laser technology to correct the sight in the apparently "lazy" eye. The treatment was performed on the NHS at Centre for Sight and the patient is now able to read and function without glasses !
