LASIK
most performed laser vision correction procedure

LASIK is an abbreviated term for "Laser Assisted In Situ KERATOMILEUSIS". It is the most commonly performed laser vision correction procedure in the world to date, with millions feeling the liberation of eliminating any dependence on glasses or lenses as a result of undergoing this form of surgery.

The concept is the same as with IntraLASIK:

STEP 1

Creating a thin flap in the front of the eye

STEP 2

Using an excimer laser to reshape the surface of the cornea below the flap to correct the vision and replace the flap.

The difference between LASIK and its successor IntraLASIK is that LASIK requires the use of a mechanical device called a microkeratome to create the flap - where IntraLASIK uses a second laser, called an Intralase, to create the flap with over 100 times the accuracy.

A microkeratome

While extremely effective, and the procedure of choice for Centre for Sight prior to the Intralase, the use of the microkeratome does have limitations:

it requires a larger degree of cornea tissue to make the correction, meaning some people with higher prescriptions or thin cornea are not suitable for the procedure.

the blade cuts deeper in the cornea in the periphery, severing nerve bundles that are deeper in the eye. LASIK patients often suffer with dry eye following their surgery - sometimes permanent. The Intralase flap is the same depth all the way across and avoids these bundles. So dry eye is rarer and easier to treat.

complications are extremely rare. But where they do occur (particularly the more serious ones) they are largely as a result of creating the flap with a blade. IntraLASIK completely eliminates these risks.

For these reasons more and more clinics are investing in the Intralase and it is becoming more widely available. Centre for Sight however were the first to introduce the Intralase to the UK back in August 2004, and as such are the longest provider of the blade-free version of LASIK in the UK.

Centre for Sight were also the first in the UK to use the Intralase to perform complex corneal transplants that are proving to halve recovery time for recipients.
