Your Consultation
probably the most thorough eye exam you will ever have...

screenings

Centre for Sight offers complimentary screening to determine your suitability for surgery. Some of the tests we carry out are listed below. Once suitability has been confirmed, you will be offered a full consultation if you decide you wish to proceed with laser vision correction.

consultation pathway

In order to determine your suitability for surgery, we carry out a thorough ophthalmic evaluation which includes a large number of tests. We follow a linear model of assessment, which means you will move from one specialist testing area to the next. This may mean having to wait a short while between tests but it is worthwhile in order to obtain accurate results. The technician responsible for each test will explain the procedure to you.

Vision testing: testing your eyesight with and without glasses, and high and low contrast with glasses

Lensometry: glasses are checked to see what you are wearing

Autorefraction and Keratometry: an automated test of your eye refraction and measure of your corneal curvature

Pupillometry: pupil size evaluation and dynamic changes in dark & light conditions

Refraction: test for glasses to determine the level of correction required

Corneal Tomography: measures the cornea in three dimensions
  - Orbscan IIz system (Bausch & Lomb)
  - Pentacam (Oculus) - more accurate measure of central corneal power and thickness

Wavefront evaluation: measures refractive power and fine aberrations using Zywave (Bausch & Lomb)

Iris Recognition & Registration: also performed with the Zywave

Pachometry: measures corneal thickness using an ultrasound device

Tonometry: measures intraocular pressure (the fluid pressure inside the eye)

Intraocular pressures: to ensure you do not have Glaucoma

Cyclopegic Refraction: measures refractive error with the eye muscles in a paralysed state

Pupil Dilation: enables the consultant to evaluate the lens and retina

Others that may be deemed necessary:

Visante (Zeiss) Ocular
Coherence Tomography
accurately images the cornea and anterior chamber of the eye in 3 dimensions and is non-contact (i.e. non-invasive)

Specular Microscopy: evaluates and measures the cell count on the back of the cornea

Visual Fields test: checks peripheral and central vision to ensure there is no loss e.g. from Glaucoma

IOLMaster (Zeiss): checks length of the eye and precisely calculates implant power that may be required for cataract surgery if appropriate

The options for Vision correction will be discussed with you by an eye surgeon. If unsuitable for laser vision correction your consultant will may suggest alternative options...
