STOP PRESS:  Crystalens at Centre for Sight - outstanding results presented at Annual Congress in Berlin  read more

This option is available to those undergoing cataract surgery or to those not suitable for laser vision correction. This implant has the ability to move in the eye just like the natural crystalline lens when in younger age. The crystalline lens hardens as we age and consequently the ability to focus up close and at middle distance disappears.Typically the crystalline lens is removed when it becomes visually significant (i.e affecting your ability to see well enough to function normally).

Implantation of the Crystal lens or Crystalens as opposed to a conventional lens implant in place of the crystalline lens enables recipients to improve distance, middle and in most instances reading vision depending on how well the eye muscles move. To improve near vision further your Centre for Sight surgeon might consider making your non-dominant eye slightly shortsighted so between the two eyes you will have an increased likelihood of full range of correction. The details of this will be discussed at your consultation at Centre for Sight.

The Crystalens (Crystal lens) implant has been extensively studied and is approved by the Food and Drug Administration, USA in place of the crystalline lens and for the correction of presbyopia at the time of cataract surgery. The Crystalens implant has been used at Centre for Sight since 2003 and 73% of patients are able to drive and read a newspaper in good light without glasses. A higher percentage (86%) had good distance and middle vision or more. The Crystalens is a good lens but like many procedures is not 100% and all patients are good candidates. The comprehensive consultation at Centre for Sight will determine your suitability for this procedure.

RECOVERY

This is usually a little slower than other lenses and delayed by about 10 days as the effect of a paralysing drop wears off. The ability to read takes muscle action and will come with practice as well as "pencil push-up" exercises as instructed by the the Centre for Sight team!
