The Intralase Femtosecond laser was FIRST made available to patients in the UK by Centre for Sight in August 2004, over 18 months before any other clinic. In keeping with our leadership role, we have now made considerable additional investment in the latest and new Intralase iFS Femtosecond laser. The installation is amongst the first two in Europe (the other in Germany).
Use of the Intralase makes corneal flap creation extremely safe, accurate and predictable, and produces much better results and vision. Thinner flaps can be created (also known as Sub-Bowman's Keratomileusis or SBK) with no biomechanical effect, better outcomes, less dry eye and increased range of correction.
The iFS has several advantages over the previous 4th generation laser:
FASTER - almost 3 times, flap creation is reduced from 30 seconds to less than 10 seconds, making the process quicker and safer with very short suction times on the eye. |
| |
PERSONALISED FLAPS - Oval shaped flaps for those with astigmatism. |
| |
BIOMECHANICAL - Reverse entry angle to maintain corneal and flap strength. |
| |
The Intralase Femtosecond laser has CE approval for use in Europe, and has been approved by the FDA in the USA since 2001 with over 2 million procedures performed to date.
At Centre for Sight the Intralase laser is also used for insertion of Intacs and corneal transplants.
