An Artificial Cornea has restored a man’s sight!

SMD Interview An Artificial Cornea has restored a mans sight!Centre for Sight Medical Director Sheraz Daya was interviewed today for SKY News after recently performing another Type 1 Boston Keratoprosthesis and significantly restoring a patient’s vision.

Norman Simpson first visited Centre for Sight in 2009 only able to recognise obvious hand movements and registered blind. A year on and Mr Simpson is now reading headlines!

The eyesight of patients with severely damaged or diseased corneas and for whom corneal transplants have failed in the past, has generally been considered untreatable and they have been left dependent on any vision in their other eye. However providing they have a healthy retina and optic nerve, an Artificial Cornea or
Keratoprosthesis could be the answer.

Mr Simpson’s surgery was particularly complicated requiring extensive Oculoplastics surgery from Mr Daya’s colleague, Raman Malhotra, before the Artificial Cornea could be considered. During the Keratoprosthesis an artificial cornea is surgically attached to the front of the cornea to provide an excellent optical system that has the potential to give “perfect” vision.

Mr Daya is predicting the procedure will become more widely available given the success it is obtaining internationally. The full interview has been televised on both SKY News and the BBC and is available to watch here…
