Clever multifocal or CrystaLens accommodative lenses are used to replace a poorly functioning lens in the eye
With advancing age, the crytalline lens in the eye becomes harder and larger and the fine focus mechanism of the eye is lost and reading glasses are required. This condition is known as Presbyopia. In time the lens becomes cloudy and is then called a Cataract.
Refractive lens exchange essentially replaces the malfunctioning crystalline lens inside the eye and corrects distance and near vision. The process is very similar to cataract surgery but requires even more precision and attention to detail to ensure astigmatism is eliminated and the correct lens size is calculated. This procedure has the added advantage of eliminating any future need for cataract surgery.
At Centre for Sight, two alternatives are used, the choice of which is influenced by the patient's activities and needs as well as underlying eye health. The CrystaLens accommodative implant moves inside the eye and in doing so provides the fine focus mechanism similar to the young crystalline lens.
Multifocal lenses are a fixed lens which are similar to bifocals in having two main focal powers. Each lens has its own benefits.
Those undergoing Cataract Surgery may wish to consider upgrading their surgery to include Multi-focal or Crystalens Implants (Added Value Cataract surgery)
