IntraLASIK: How Does It Differ?

Unlike regular Lasik, IntraLASIK now available in the UK is an ALL laser procedure that uses a combination of two lasers, the Intralase™ to cut the flap and the EXCIMER laser to sculpt the cornea.

Not many know that LASIK consists of two steps, the first is the surgical creation of a thin corneal flap, traditionally with a blade housed in a device called a microkeratome. Next the Excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea correcting the refractive error. Whilst being an excellent procedure, traditional Lasik using a mechanical microkeratome has some limitations and potential risks.Intralasik using the Intralase FS laser is a different procedure altogether.

INTRALASE FS®

This futuristic technology provides a computer controlled approach to the important FIRST STEP of the LASIK procedure of flap creation. This step has now been enhanced by the laser's micron level accuracy, making every procedure more predictable. The femtosecond laser emits 15,000 pulses per second of 1,053-nm infrared light with an extremely small spot size with NO collateral damage. Replacing the traditional microkeratome blade with a silent, tiny beam of laser light, the Intralase FS™ laser dramatically reduces the risk of complication in creating the corneal flap. As opposed to traditional blade microkeratomes, which cut the sides of the flap along with the plane of the flap, the Intralase™ separates the tissue in the plane of the flap and only when this is accomplished and surgeon satisfied, cuts the sides and creates the hinge and edges as a last stage. As a result any problem from loss of suction or movement does not result in a major complication as it might with a traditional microkeratome. The Intralase™ or Intralasik procedure can be restarted and accomplished at the same sitting rather than having to wait 3 months. This remarkable precision and control of Intralase and Intralasik provides you the consumer with more confidence.

microkeratomes

Microkeratomes are by comparison to Intralase less predictable in terms of flap creation and thicker and thinner flaps can be created unexpectedly possibly resulting in abandonment of the procedure.

More patients may now be candidates for laser vision correction due to this unique level of precision that before Intralase was previously unavailable.

In the past, people with corneas too thin, flat, steep or irregular weren't considered good candidates for LASIK. With Intralase™'s high degree of accuracy, we are able to help correct many more individuals.

Do not take our word for it - we suggest you investigate Intralase independently ! You will find that Intralase is rapidly growing in popularity and the outstanding safety record makes Intralase the obvious choice.Centre for Sight, UK invested in this technology and commenced the first UK procedures in August 2003.

As the UK's first provider of Intralase and Intralasik, we shall be honored to be entrusted with the care of your eyes.
