Eye surgeon is recognised for "miracle" work

Pioneering eye surgeon Sheraz Daya has been described as "a genius and a miracle worker" by a patient at East Grinstead's "magical" Queen Victoria Hospital.

Hospital staff honoured at health awards

Two members of staff at the Queen Victoria Hospital (QVH) have received awards for their hard work.

At a ceremony at the Brighton Centre last Wednesday, TV personality Claudia Winkleman handed out the prestigious NHS South East Coast best of health and social care awards.

In the live surgery session, Sheraz Daya, MD, became the first surgeon to perform therapeutic keratoplasty with femtosecond laser at an ophthalmic conference.
“This is the most important improvement in corneal surgery in the past 30 years,” said session chairperson, Lucio Buratto, MD.
The session, jointly chaired by Dr. Buratto and Tayo Akingbehin, MD, also included implantations of the VeriFlex phakic IOL (Advanced Medical Optics), the Icare Evolution phakic IOL (Corneal) and the Artiflex phakic IOL (Ophtec), and reflected many of the issues discussed during the conference.
Dan Z. Reinstein, MD, also performed a wavefront topography-based repair of a complex post-refractive case on a fellow ophthalmologist.
The case of therapeutic keratoplasty closed out the session and featured an introduction by Stephen G. Slade, MD, donor tissue preparation by Thomas Neuhann, MD, as well as the keratoplasty by Dr. Daya. All surgeries were performed at Moorfields Eye Hospital.

Centre for Sight performed surgery on Living TV's Extreme Makeover program. Using the Gold Standard in Laser Vision Correction - Intralasik and Bausch and Lomb's Zyoptix platform Theresa Hepburn (LINK) underwent Laser vision correction as part of her Extreme Makeover process. Theresa required a complex correction and also had visual problems as a result of underlying Albinism. Medical Director Sheraz Daya was confident that he could provide her with considerable improvement and eliminate her dependency on glasses.
