New contact lens materials do not protect against infection...

An article in the March 2009 issue of Ophthalmology highlighted the findings of a recent large case-control study where wearers of both daily disposable and silicone hydrogel contact lenses were found to be at increased risk of sterile keratitis and mechanical disorders. Additional risk factors for sterile keratitis: overnight wear, more days per week of wear, poor hand hygiene, smoking, less experience and mechanical disorders.

Drops are hard to use videotaped evidence finds...

Researchers videotaped 139 patients as they instilled one dropof medication into their eye from two different bottle designs. Even thoughmost patients reported relatively good performance, less than one-third successfully instilled a single drop - and only a single drop - without touching the bottle tip to the eye. Some patients failed to get the drop in their eye (17.2 percent and 25 percent with the 15-mL and 2.5-mL bottles, respectively).
