Zyoptix Wavefront: The Technology

The simplicity and safety of a Zyoptix wavefront treatment depends on highly sophisticated, computer-controlled machinery, which is interlinked by specially designed software. In a Zyoptix treatment, the following equipment is used:

The Intralase FS 30 Laser

This is a high-precision Femtosecond laser which the surgeon uses for the first stage of the operation - to create the flap under which the second laser the Bausch and Lomb Z100 Wavefront Treatment. Centre for Sight is the first Centre to install this laser and as of Oct 2005 (over a year later) remains the only UK centre to offer the technology and Intralasik Procedure. The laser is used in ALL Lasik procedures performed at Centre for Sight, UK.

The Orbscan® IIz Topographer

As discussed earlier, the Orbscan analyses the shape of your cornea and allows the surgeon to decide if it is suitable for treatment. The 3 dimensional image produced by the Orbscan enables your surgeon to determine with confidence the suitablility of your corneal shape. Without the Orbscan the dimensions of the back part of the cornea cannot be evaluated.

The Orbscan works by using a scanning slit which passes the eye in two directions. Mathematical data from the slit video images are then collected and coded into the Orbscan map used by the surgeon for evaluation

The Zywave™ Aberrometer

As described earlier, the Zywave measures your complete optical system so that your surgeon can plan the best treatment type for your eyes. The Zywave measures your unique Wavefront and also dynamically measures your pupil size in dim light conditions. This is documented on the Zywave report generated for the surgeon.

The Zywave and Orbscan IIz units are combined together as a dual workstation the ZDW short for Zyoptix dual workstation.

The Excimer Laser -Z100 Bausch & Lomb

Zyoptix custom wavefront treatments are computer generated based on results obtained from the Zywave and Orbscan and transferred to the laser. The Bausch & Lomb Technolas® Z100 excimer laser (which supercedes the 217z) uses cool ultra-violet light to re-shape the cornea with the latest flying spot technique and Iris Recognition and Registration.

Zyoptix Treatment Cards

The Zyoptix laser allows your surgeon to treat your corneas with much greater precision than with a standard treatment, shaping laser treatment for your eyes only. This is because, as well as a standard 2mm diameter beam, the Zyoptix Z100 laser also has a finer 1mm beam for fine-tuning and for treating the aberrations caused by scattered light. Both laser beams are shaped by your personal Zyoptix Treatment Card, controlling the laser beam throughout every stage of your treatment. The treatment card changes the size and shape of the laser beam. There are different cards used for different Zyoptix treatments and in this case the wavefront treatment card will be used.

Automatic Patient Recognition

This new addition to the platform will ensure procedures are even safer. The software uses IRIS RECOGNITION technology previously only used by the military to identify individuals. Images of your iris on each eye are acquired by the Zywave device. This is then stored to recognize you at a later date and is also exported for use on the Z100 laser when necessary.

This technology is now used to correctly identify the patient and eye before surgery is performed.

The Iris Recognition Eyetracker

This highly sophisticated safety device locks in on the iris and ensures the treatment to the eye is applied in the same way as the information was acquired by the Zywave. The system tracks tiny eye movements and guides the laser to follow them. This makes sure that the laser treats the correct areas of your eye with phenomenal accuracy. The eyetracker incorporates advanced video tracking and reads the exact position of your eye at about 240 times per second. The laser also responds within 6 milliseconds, among the fastest response times available! The eyetracker forces the laser to stop treatment if your eye moves outside the laser treatment range.
