Why choose IntraLASIK ?

IntraLASIK uses TWO lasers rather than conventional Lasik which uses one laser to reshape the cornea after a BLADE in an automated device called a keratome is used to cut the flap. IntraLASIK uses the ultra precise Intralase femtosecond laser to cut the flap and does this reproducibly to a high level of accuracy. Flaps are created under direct visualization by the surgeon unlike most keratome devices.

Improved Safety and less Risk:

With Intralasik there are no major complications in flap creation (unlike keratome devices that can result in partial flaps buttonholes and even fragmented flaps).

  • Intralase uses disposable instruments to perform IntraLASIK. There is no sterilization of sophisticated devices and the low risk of infection is decreased even further. Unlike most other laser centres, at Centre for Sight separate disposables are used for each eye - further reassurance to you about safety.

Decreased incidence of Dry eye following IntraLASIK compared to blade Lasik.Intralase flaps are thinner in the peripheral cornea and will not cut major nerve bundles (unlike the blade keratome devices used in traditional Lasik which cut thicker at the sides and thin centrally).

Main nerves take longer to grow back and the duration and severity of Dry eye is worse with blade keratome Lasik. With Intralase only the superficial nerve plexus near the surface is involved and this returns to normal within weeks.

Better outcomes demonstrated by investigators as well as ourselves. Recipients of IntraLASIK obtain consistently better levels of vision beyond 6/6. See our section on RESULTS .

The precision of Intralase results in a flap of perfect dimensions and equal thickness all the way across (demonstrated using high frequency ultrasound). The Intralasik procedure reduces flap induced aberrations and astigmatism and we believe this the reason for better visual outcomes and improved predictability.

Lower enhancement (retreatment) rates down from 2% to 1% for myopia (700 consecutive cases - Aug 2005). The Intralasik procedure is more predictable than keratome Lasik.
