Mr Sheraz Daya speaks at the Grand Opening of Ridley Innovation Centre

Rayner – a British manufacturer that worked with Sir Harold Ridley and manufactured the first intraocular lens will be opening their £20 million state-of-art facility opening of Ridley Innovation Centre in West Sussex on April 8th 2016.  Centre for Sight’s medical director, Sheraz Daya has the honour and privilege of being invited to speak at the inauguration on the “History of Cataract Surgery”.

Rayner’s new Worthing base will be used for research advances in cataract surgery as well as manufacturing with the capacity to increase production of artificial lenses from 700,000 a year to three million. Rayner CEO, Tim Clover, “The opening of The Ridley Innovation Centre marks a significant step in what is sure to be an exciting, transformative period of growth ahead of Rayner.”

CATARACT surgery was once a painstaking task – but surgical advances mean the procedure is now over in minutes. Life-changing lenses for cataract surgery transform the lives of hundreds of thousands of patients a year in the UK. Cutting edge medical procedures have come a very long way from their ancient origins. Yet, over 4000 years ago, our ancestors had crude techniques to improve the sight of people suffering from chitta motia (the modern Urdu word for cataracts, literally translated as “white blindness”)

Mr. Daya’s special presentation focusses on the evolution of cataract surgery from ancient Babylonian times to the most recent developments as well as what the future holds. The infographic mentioned below summarises Mr. Daya’s presentation on Cataract Eye Surgery through ages and Rayner’s landmark role in making modern cataract surgery what it is today.

Rayner in supporting Sir Harold Ridley in developing the intraocular lens has made a phenomenal contribution to ophthalmology.  It is a joy to see a British company put all the pieces in place to take on a bigger role on the world stage and I personally look forward to working closely with the company” said Mr. Daya.

Mr Daya is often invited to speak at conferences all around the world – his next congress is the ASCRS Symposium on Cataract, IOL and Refractive Surgery at New Ollrans in May 2016.
