The Venerable Ashin Nyanissara also known as Sitagu Sayadaw, a prominent Abbot from Myanmar (Burma) underwent the ultimate in cataract surgery at Centre for Sight. Mr. Sheraz Daya performed the unusual request of surgery on both eyes on the same day. The Victus laser was used to perform the preliminary part of the cataract surgery and FINEvision trifocal implants (courtesy of Physiol) were implanted. The next day Sitagu Sayadaw was completely free of glasses and attended an important meeting with Mercy Ships to arrange an expedition to Myanmar.

Mr. Daya visited Myanmar in 1994 with Mr. Wilbert Hoe where they performed the first small incision phacoemulsification procedures at the first eye unit established by Sitagu Sayadaw. Since then Sayadaw has established multiple charitable eye surgical centres throughout Myanmar which are making a significant contribution to eliminating blindness in the country.

Centre for Sight is honoured and privileged to have had the opportunity to look after Sitagu Sayadaw and delighted that he has had an exceptional visual outcome.
