How Cataract Surgery Reduces Fall Risk in Older Adults

As we age, falls become a leading cause of injury among older adults, often resulting in significant health complications, reduced independence and subsequently, isolation. While various factors do contribute to falls, impaired vision particularly from cataracts, also plays a crucial role.

Understanding the Connection Between Cataracts and Falls

Falls are a major concern for people over the age of 65, with one in four experiencing at least one fall each year. Among those aged 70 and older, 8% require emergency care due to fall-related injuries, and nearly 12% of falls can be fatal [REF1].

One significant and often modifiable risk factor is poor vision. Visual impairment, including conditions such as cataracts, is common amongst older adults and has been strongly linked to a higher risk of falls. Equally, cataracts, characterised by the clouding of the eye’s natural lens, leads to diminished visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and depth perception. These visual impairments can make it all the more challenging for patients to navigate environments safely, and therefore increasing the likelihood of trips and falls.

The Protective Role of Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is a procedure that is used to replace the clouded lens with a clear artificial one. But beyond clearer sight, research shows it also plays a crucial role in reducing the risk of falls.

A prospective study published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology found that 37% of patients experienced falls prior to cataract surgery, compared to just 7% afterwards which is a statistically significant reduction (p<0.001) [REF1].

This clear drop in falls highlights how cataract surgery can be a life-changing intervention, particularly for elderly adults. By restoring vision, the procedure not only enhances daily independence and quality of life but also greatly reduces the risk of injury caused by trips and falls.
