What is Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT)?
Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT), also known as photobiomodulation, is an in-clinic treatment that applies low-power light energy to the eyelids to support the function of the meibomian glands and ocular surface. These tiny glands produce the oil layer of the tear film, which prevents rapid tear evaporation and contributes to comfortable, stable vision.
Unlike IPL, which uses brief pulses of broad-spectrum light, LLLT uses focused low-intensity light (often in the visible red and near-infrared range) to stimulate cellular metabolism and reduce low-grade inflammation. This may encourage healthier oil secretion, improved tear quality, and reduced eye irritation over a course of treatments.
At Centre for Sight, LLLT is part of a comprehensive dry eye management approach that includes diagnostics, personalised treatment planning, and specialist aftercare.
Types of Dry Eye Treatment
1
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)
IPL uses controlled pulses of light directed at the skin around the eyes to target inflammation and improve the function of your meibomian glands; the tiny oil glands responsible for keeping your tears stable. By stimulating these glands and reducing inflammation, IPL can reduce tear evaporation and improve comfort for many patients with Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). Most patients undergo a series of treatments over a few weeks, with effects building over time.
2
Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT)
LLLT is a gentle form of light therapy that delivers non-visible wavelengths to the eyelid area to support meibomian gland function at a cellular level. This treatment can help improve oil secretion and tear quality, often working well in conjunction with IPL. Because LLLT uses a different type of light, it can be suitable for patients with more sensitive skin or when combined light modalities enhance tear film stability.
3
Omega-3 Supplements
Omega-3 fatty acids are essential nutrients that support healthy oil production from the meibomian glands. Supplementation with high-quality, highly absorbable omega-3 can help improve the lipid layer of the tear film, reduce tear evaporation, and support overall eye comfort. Omega-3 is often recommended as a foundational part of dry eye management, especially for evaporative dry eye.
4
Dry Eye Drops & Medicated Therapies
Artificial tears and prescription eye drops are a cornerstone of dry eye management. Lubricating drops provide immediate symptomatic relief by moistening the eye surface, while medicated therapies (such as anti-inflammatory or lipid-enhancing formulations) can address specific causes of dry eye. Your consultant will recommend the most appropriate drops based on your dry eye profile.

A friend recommended Centre for Sight.
I had two cataracts removed and am delighted with the outcome. All the staff were highly professional, took meticulous care and their work was exemplary. Particular thanks to Adora who was so kind and reassuring throughout. I highly recommend Centre for Sight for anyone considering treatment.
Eventually I went to Specsavers in Egham for some mild driving glasses and the optician looked into my eyes and said that he had never seen such a good job on lens replacements. Best he had ever seen.
