Benefits of Omega 3:

Omega 3s are an important oil required for optimal meibomian gland secretions. The meibomian glands located in the lids produces oils which should have the consistency of Olive oil readily mixing with tears reducing evaporation.  Abnormal oil production from the meibomian glands results in a condition known as meibomian gland disease or dysfunction (MGD) and accounts for 80% of dry eye conditions. These essential triglyceride oils promote the production of healthy oily secretions, which helps to protect tears from evaporating too quickly and thereby improving dry eye [REF 1 and 2].  Omega 3 is also crucial for retinal health and has anti-ageing benefits[REF 3 and 4] making this an essential supplement.

Many with evaporative dry eye find they tear excessively when they are out in windy conditions.   Good oils preserves the tear film even in windy and dry conditions.

Omega-3 fatty acid supplements, including fish oil and DHA/EPA formulations, are generally safe for most people and may support eye health and dry eye management; however, potential risks can include mild digestive symptoms, increased bruising or bleeding risk at higher doses, and possible interactions with anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications. Individuals with bleeding disorders, those preparing for surgery, or patients taking blood-thinning medication should seek medical advice before starting omega-3 supplements. As with any nutritional supplement, dosage, underlying health conditions, and overall treatment goals should be discussed with a qualified clinician to ensure safety and suitability.

Why is there excessive tearing when the eye is dry?

Tears evaporate in windy conditions, the eye becomes dry which is a stimulus for the lacrimal gland (the gland that produces tears) to go into overdrive and produce a lot of tears in an uncontrolled manner. This is known as “reflex tearing” – a reflex to a dry eye surface.

What other benefits are there to taking Omega 3 supplements?

Omega 3 fatty acids are critical components of cell membranes including those of the retina.  Studies performed demonstrate s lower risk of developing age related macular degeneration (ARMD) and also diabetic retinopathy.  They have also been shown to inhibit abnormal blood vessel growth in the retina [REF 5].  There has also been reports of benefit in those with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia reducing the rate of cognitive decline [REF 6].
