Ruby had relied on glasses since childhood.

Gaming isn’t simply something she does in her spare time. As a full-time streamer and digital content creator, screens, cameras and gaming are all part of her working life.

Her glasses were always there too, whether she was streaming, editing content, travelling or scrolling through social media.

Contact lenses offered an alternative, but long periods of wear could leave her eyes feeling dry.

There’s no special form of LASIK exclusively for gamers. What matters is finding the right vision correction treatment for your individual eyes, prescription and lifestyle.

But for someone who spends a lot of time gaming, streaming or working digitally, life without constantly reaching for glasses or contact lenses can have some practical advantages.

• No glasses under your headset: Anyone who regularly games in glasses will know the feeling. Frames sitting beneath a headset can become uncomfortable, particularly during longer sessions.

• No reflections on stream: For streamers and content creators like Ruby, lighting and monitors can create unwanted reflections across spectacle lenses when you’re on camera.

• Less reliance on contact lenses: Long gaming sessions and contact lenses aren’t always the happiest combination. Concentrating on a screen can reduce how frequently we blink, which may contribute to dry-eye symptoms.

Laser eye surgery removes the need to wear contact lenses to correct your prescription, although it’s important to remember that laser eye surgery itself can temporarily cause or worsen dry-eye symptoms during recovery.

Ruby’s Laser Eye Surgery Experience

After a comprehensive assessment at Centre for Sight, Ruby was found to be suitable for laser eye surgery.

Her treatment was performed by Centre for Sight Medical Director and consultant ophthalmic surgeon Mr Sheraz Daya.

The laser procedure itself took just minutes and Ruby returned home the same day.

Am I Suitable for Laser Eye Surgery?

Being a gamer doesn’t make you more or less suitable for laser eye surgery.

Your suitability depends on your eyes.

At Centre for Sight, we will assess factors including:

• Your age and prescription: patients should be aged 18 or over and generally have a stable prescription before laser eye surgery is considered.
• Your corneas: detailed scans and diagnostic testing allow your consultant to assess the shape, thickness and health of your corneas.
• Your eye health: conditions including significant dry eye or keratoconus may affect whether laser eye surgery is appropriate.
• Your lifestyle: how you work, exercise, travel and spend your free time can help determine which vision correction procedure may be best suited to you.
• Your expectations: vision correction isn’t about promising “perfect” eyesight. Your consultant will discuss what can realistically be achieved based on your individual eyes.

And if LASIK isn’t the right choice? It doesn’t necessarily mean vision correction isn’t possible.

Depending on your eyes and prescription, alternatives such as TransPRK or Implantable Contact Lenses (ICL) may be more appropriate.

2. Does gaming or screen time damage your eyes after LASIK?

Gaming or using a computer will not cause your LASIK treatment to “wear off”. However, concentrating on a screen for long periods can reduce how often you blink, which may contribute to dry, tired or uncomfortable eyes. This can be particularly noticeable during the early recovery period, so regular screen breaks and following your prescribed aftercare are important.

3. Is laser eye surgery suitable for gamers?

Being a gamer doesn’t make you more or less suitable for laser eye surgery. Suitability depends on factors such as your prescription, age, corneal health and overall eye health. 4. Can laser eye surgery help with dry eyes from gaming?

Laser eye surgery is not a treatment for dry eye. In fact, some patients may experience temporary dry-eye symptoms following laser eye surgery. If you already experience dryness during long gaming or screen sessions, this should be discussed during your consultation so your eye health can be assessed before recommending treatment.

There isn’t a specific type of laser eye surgery designed for gamers. The most appropriate treatment depends on your individual eyes, prescription and lifestyle.
